The latest installment in the Spider-Man franchise, titled Spider-Man: Brand New Day, has made a remarkable impact in China, achieving the highest opening for a Hollywood superhero film in seven years. This new film, featuring Tom Holland and Zendaya, launched in Chinese theaters on Wednesday and quickly garnered impressive ticket sales, amassing over $16.5 million (RMB 112 million) by midday. According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, which referenced data from the prominent ticketing service Maoyan, the film is projected to reach around $37.4 million (RMB 254 million) on its first day. This impressive figure marks the largest opening day for a superhero movie in China since Spider-Man: Far From Home, which debuted with $36 million back in 2019. In contrast, Venom: The Last Dance only managed to collect $9.4 million on its first day in 2024, highlighting the significant resurgence of interest in the Spider-Man franchise.
Industry analysts are optimistic about the film's potential for a successful theatrical run, with Maoyan estimating a total box office take of approximately $255 million (RMB 1.73 billion). Meanwhile, rival box office tracker Dengta predicts that the film could surpass $265 million (RMB 1.8 billion) in total earnings. If these forecasts are accurate, Spider-Man: Brand New Day would become the highest-grossing Hollywood film in China since Avengers: Endgame, which was released in 2019, and it may even outpace Avatar: The Way of Water, which earned $246 million in the Chinese market. The excitement surrounding the film was palpable even before its release, as advance ticket sales reached $18.6 million (RMB 126.2 million), the highest presales for an imported film in the last three summers, indicating strong anticipation among Chinese moviegoers.
