Circus Performer Dies After Being Buried Alive in Haryana Stunt

A tragic incident unfolded in Haryana's Nuh district when a 27-year-old circus performer, identified as Deepak, lost his life after a stunt that involved being buried underground for an extended period. The performer, hailing from Gaunchi village in Faridabad, was part of a traveling bicycle circus that had set up its show in Khori village, Tauru. Deepak had captivated the audience with his impressive bicycle tricks, showcasing his skills in balancing, riding without looking at the wheels, and performing stunts while standing on a moving bicycle. However, the final act took a disastrous turn when he entered a pit, covered himself with soil, and attempted a stunt known as a 'live samadhi,' which is sometimes featured at village fairs in northern India.

According to police reports, Deepak is believed to have entered the pit on Thursday, with his body being discovered only when circus members began excavating the site during the finale, three days later. This shocking revelation has prompted local authorities to launch an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. They are currently questioning fellow performers and local residents to ascertain the exact duration Deepak was buried and whether the stunt exceeded its intended timeframe. Witnesses familiar with such performances have noted that they typically require meticulous planning, including the creation of small air holes in the sack and narrow channels in the soil to facilitate airflow. Despite these safety measures, performers usually remain buried for only a few hours or, at most, a day due to the heightened risk of suffocation.
