Apple Inc. achieved a significant milestone on Tuesday as its stock price soared to $342.89, briefly elevating its market capitalization beyond $5 trillion. This remarkable feat makes Apple only the second company in history to reach this valuation, following Nvidia. Although the stock closed at $340.08, just shy of the $340.43 needed to secure the milestone at the end of the trading day, the achievement was notable nonetheless. This surge in stock price came on the heels of Apple reclaiming its title as the world's most valuable public company, overtaking Nvidia in the process. Investors had previously expressed concerns about Apple's perceived lag in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector, but recent developments have shifted this narrative dramatically.
What makes this moment particularly intriguing is Apple's relatively modest capital expenditure for fiscal 2025, which amounted to only $12.7 billion. In stark contrast, major tech players such as Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta are projected to collectively spend over $700 billion this year, primarily focused on AI data centers. A year ago, this disparity was viewed as a significant vulnerability for Apple, suggesting that the company had missed the AI wave entirely. However, investor sentiment has flipped in a matter of days, reflecting a newfound appreciation for Apple's strategic approach to AI infrastructure.
