On July 30, gold and silver prices experienced a notable decrease across various cities in India. In Mumbai, the cost for 10 grams of 24-carat gold was reported at Rs 1,44,330, while 10 grams of 22-carat gold was priced at Rs 1,32,300, according to data from goodreturns.in. The decline in prices was also reflected in the MCX gold August contract, which saw a slight drop of 0.09%, bringing the price down to Rs 1,41,650 per 10 grams. Similarly, MCX silver September futures experienced a more significant decline, falling by 0.85% to reach Rs 2,15,621 per kilogram during the morning trading session on Thursday.
The recent changes in gold prices come amid a backdrop of increasing unofficial gold inflows into India, which have surged since the government raised import tariffs on gold earlier this year. This decision, made on May 13, saw import tariffs more than double to 15%, a move aimed at curbing demand, reducing the trade deficit, and alleviating pressure on the Indian rupee. The World Gold Council highlighted the impact of these tariffs, noting that the significant difference between the official and grey market prices has created a thriving underground market. Sachin Jain, the chief executive of the WGC’s Indian operations, emphasized the extent of this arbitrage, stating that the combined duty and GST create an 18% price difference, which incentivizes the growth of an entire industry focused on unofficial gold transactions.
