The introduction of numerous generic versions of semaglutide has not hindered the impressive growth of Ozempic in India. According to Pharmarack, a firm specializing in pharmaceutical market intelligence, the sales figures for the original Ozempic brand have shown consistent month-on-month increases. Specifically, sales rose from Rs 10 crore in March 2026, coinciding with the entry of generic competitors, to Rs 11 crore by June. During the same timeframe, unit sales surged from 12,000 to 18,000, marking a remarkable 50 percent rise. This trend is mirrored by Wegovy, another product from Novo Nordisk, which is a higher-dose semaglutide aimed at weight management, also experiencing steady growth. Industry experts attribute this success not solely to the medication itself but to the strategic decisions made by the company. By reducing prices immediately after the patent expiration and the arrival of generics, Novo Nordisk effectively minimized the competitive edge that generics typically enjoy. Furthermore, Ozempic benefits from a long-established trust among physicians and a patient demographic that is largely willing to pay out of pocket for weight loss solutions, showing little sensitivity to price changes.
In a recent interview with News18, Vikrant Shrotriya, managing director of Novo Nordisk India, confirmed that the brand has not seen a decline in revenue since losing patent protection in March. He expressed confidence in the brand's ongoing growth, stating, "I would not be smiling if it was dry revenue. Eventually, I think we are sequentially, month by month, growing — probably one of the examples that, despite the generic launches, month over month, we are getting the support of many of the doctors across and also from the patient. And probably because we are originators." This sentiment is echoed by Dr. Anoop Misra, a leading endocrinologist in India and chairman at Fortis C-DOC, who emphasized that Ozempic's dominance is rooted in its status as the originator brand, supported by extensive clinical evidence regarding its efficacy and safety. He noted that the brand has cultivated strong confidence among physicians over the years, benefiting from high brand recognition and adherence to stringent quality standards. For many healthcare providers and patients, particularly in the context of chronic disease management, the reliability of clinical evidence and consistent product quality outweighs the allure of cheaper alternatives.
