Iran is on the verge of receiving its initial shipment of shoulder-fired air defense systems manufactured in China, marking a significant step in the nation's efforts to restore its military capabilities following extensive conflict. This development comes as part of a larger agreement that could see Tehran acquiring between 300 to 400 units of these man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS), specifically the QW-12 and FN-16 models. The deal, valued at approximately $60 to $70 million, is reported to have been facilitated by Zhongqing Baoshang International Investment, a Hong Kong-based intermediary that has played a crucial role in connecting Iranian authorities with Chinese suppliers. The first deliveries are anticipated to be dispatched from Urumqi, located in western China, and will likely travel through Pakistan before arriving in Iran. However, the specific mode of transport—whether by air or land—remains unconfirmed by the sources involved in the negotiations.
The acquisition of these missile systems is particularly significant for Iran, as it seeks to bolster its short-range air defenses in the wake of military engagements with the United States and Israel, which have highlighted critical vulnerabilities in the protection of essential military and infrastructure sites. Military analysts emphasize the importance of portable air defense systems in modern warfare, noting their rapid deployability and operational flexibility, which make them less susceptible to enemy targeting compared to static installations.
