Allegations of Sexual Torture Against Ukrainian Prisoners by Russian Forces

Recent reports have surfaced alleging that Russian forces have systematically employed sexual violence as a method of warfare against Ukrainian prisoners. Survivors, including both military personnel and civilians, have come forward with harrowing accounts of rape and genital mutilation, claiming that these acts are intended to humiliate and psychologically dismantle them. This information was detailed in a report by The Wall Street Journal, which draws upon interviews with former detainees, testimonies from Ukrainian prosecutors, and insights from United Nations investigators. The findings suggest that sexual torture has been a pervasive issue in Russian custody, particularly affecting male prisoners.

One of the individuals who shared his experience, Serhii Boychuk, recounted his capture by Russian forces in 2022, followed by two years of detention during which he was subjected to severe beatings and sexual torture at the hands of guards. Boychuk, now 33, described the traumatic events in graphic detail, stating that he was raped with various objects and threatened with a knife against his genitals. He emphasized that the intent behind such brutal treatment was to psychologically shatter him. Boychuk was released in October 2024 as part of a prisoner exchange, but his story is just one among many. Another former prisoner echoed similar experiences, highlighting the alarming prevalence of sexualized torture in Russian detention facilities.
