Amit Shah Assesses Assam Flood Crisis Amid Ongoing Recovery Efforts

On Wednesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah conducted a review of the flood situation in Assam, engaging in discussions with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Despite the receding floodwaters, Sarma highlighted that numerous residents remain unable to return to their homes due to the extensive destruction caused by the floods. The situation remains dire, with the death toll reaching 78 as over 300,000 individuals continue to be affected across seven districts. Shah's second conversation with Sarma in a week underscored the government's commitment to providing necessary support for relief, restoration, and rebuilding initiatives in the region.

Sarma reported that while the flood situation has shown signs of improvement, with no significant rainfall since July 21, the scale of the devastation presents new challenges for those attempting to return home. Many houses have been severely damaged or are filled with mud and silt, making it impossible for residents to access their properties. Additionally, several areas remain difficult to reach due to blocked roads caused by mud and debris that washed down from the hills of Nagaland during the flooding. The Chief Minister emphasized that Assam does not require international assistance, asserting that both state and central governments are equipped to manage the crisis effectively. Donations and support are being received from various parts of India, showcasing a united effort to aid the affected communities.
