Delhi Government Declares No Legal Action Against Protest Participants

On Thursday, the government of Delhi made a significant announcement regarding the recent protests that took place at Jantar Mantar, stating that no punitive legal measures will be pursued against those who participated in the demonstrations. This decision comes amidst ongoing investigations by the police into the violent incidents that occurred during the protests. The Home Department of the Delhi government issued an official statement clarifying that police forces across the National Capital Territory (NCT) have been instructed not to initiate any adverse legal proceedings against individuals involved in these protests. However, the government made it clear that this protective measure does not extend to individuals with prior criminal records. The statement emphasized, 'No adverse legal action shall be taken by any police authority within the NCT of Delhi against persons involved in these protests. However, this protection shall not extend to persons having criminal antecedents.' This announcement is particularly noteworthy as it aims to encourage peaceful expression of dissent while also delineating boundaries for those with a history of criminal behavior.

In addition to the announcement regarding legal action, the government also indicated that it would expedite the review process for any arrests or detentions that have already occurred in relation to the protests. This move is intended to facilitate the prompt release of individuals who qualify for such relief. The decision follows the registration of 13 First Information Reports (FIRs) by the Delhi Police concerning the violence that erupted at Jantar Mantar on July 20. This proactive stance by the Delhi government mirrors similar measures taken by other state governments, including those in Bihar, Assam, and Maharashtra, which have also opted to refrain from taking punitive action against protest participants under certain conditions. The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), a prominent group leading the protests, has stated that they will return to Jantar Mantar if the FIRs associated with the demonstrations are not rescinded, indicating that the situation remains fluid and contentious.
