Delhi-Haridwar Highway Traffic Restrictions for Kanwar Yatra

As the annual Kanwar Yatra approaches, the regions of Meerut, Delhi, and their neighboring areas are preparing for significant traffic restrictions on the Delhi-Haridwar route. These measures are expected to be implemented in phases, impacting commuters who travel between these key locations. Authorities have urged residents and travelers to plan their journeys ahead of time, as heavy traffic congestion is anticipated over the next two weeks. A traffic advisory has been issued, indicating that heavy vehicles will be prohibited from using the Meerut-Haridwar corridor starting July 30. Furthermore, a complete ban on all vehicular traffic will be enforced on both the Delhi-Haridwar Highway and the Ganga Canal road from August 4 to August 12. This initiative aims to facilitate the smooth movement of kanwariyas, the devotees participating in this religious pilgrimage. The restrictions are likely to cause delays for those traveling between Delhi, Haridwar, Dehradun, and Saharanpur, potentially resulting in longer travel times and increased fares for buses and taxis due to necessary diversions.

Route diversions have already been implemented since July 29, redirecting general traffic to alternative roads to alleviate congestion. The Kanwar Yatra is recognized as one of the largest religious pilgrimages in North India, attracting hundreds of thousands of devotees of Lord Shiva who journey to Haridwar to collect sacred Ganga water. This pilgrimage sees the Delhi-Haridwar Highway transform into one of the most heavily trafficked routes during this period, prompting local authorities to establish special traffic management and security protocols. In Meerut, a temporary police booth has been set up along the route, where officials are actively preparing for the influx of devotees. Law enforcement has urged travelers, particularly those making their way between Delhi and Uttarakhand, to adhere to traffic advisories and utilize alternate routes to minimize delays.
