On Wednesday, the US Federal Reserve opted to maintain its current interest rates, leaving them unchanged for the fifth consecutive meeting. The benchmark interest rate remains in the range of 3.50% to 3.75%. This decision was anticipated by market participants, yet it comes at a time when inflationary pressures are mounting, particularly due to the ongoing conflict in Iran. Notably, three of the twelve members of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) expressed their support for a quarter-percentage-point increase, highlighting the growing concern over rising prices.
The Fed's new chair, Kevin Warsh, addressed the media following the meeting, emphasizing that while the employment sector is performing well, inflation remains a significant challenge. He stated, “We’re doing pretty well collectively as a country, as policymakers on the full employment side,” but acknowledged the difficulties in managing prices. Warsh described current inflation levels as elevated, indicating that this issue has dominated discussions regarding the effectiveness of monetary policy. Although inflation eased to an annual rate of 3.5% last month, forecasts suggest it may rise again due to volatile oil prices, which have been exacerbated by the geopolitical tensions stemming from the US's stance on Iran.
