Hadi Matar Convicted of Terrorism for Attack on Salman Rushdie

Hadi Matar, the individual responsible for the stabbing of renowned author Salman Rushdie in 2022, has been found guilty of federal terrorism charges. The jury in Buffalo deliberated for approximately two hours before reaching a unanimous verdict against the 28-year-old, who now faces the possibility of a life sentence. Matar was convicted on multiple counts, including engaging in transnational terrorism and providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization. This conviction adds to his existing 25-year prison sentence from a previous state court ruling for attempted murder related to the same incident.

The attack on Salman Rushdie occurred during a literary event in western New York, where he was set to discuss the importance of writer safety. In a shocking turn of events, Matar rushed the stage and stabbed Rushdie 15 times in front of a horrified audience. Although Rushdie survived the brutal assault, he sustained significant injuries, including severe nerve damage and the loss of vision in his right eye.
