ICE Renews Controversial Texas Detention Center Lease Amid Outcry

The lease for a contentious migrant detention facility in Texas has been extended by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), despite ongoing calls for its closure due to allegations of human rights violations. Last week, ICE confirmed that the Camp East Montana site in El Paso will remain operational for at least another year, incurring an additional cost of $776 million to taxpayers. This decision has sparked significant backlash from various advocacy groups and Democratic lawmakers who have been vocal about the treatment of detainees at the facility.

For months, numerous Democratic representatives and human rights organizations have been advocating for the closure of Camp East Montana, citing disturbing reports of detainee mistreatment since the facility's inception in August 2025. Veronica Escobar, a Democratic congresswoman from Texas, expressed her concerns in an interview with Al Jazeera, stating, "They’re getting substandard food. They’re not getting the medical [care] that they need. This place needs to be shut down." A joint investigation conducted by Human Rights Watch and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) revealed alarming incidents of physical abuse by guards, medical neglect, overcrowding, and a troubling lack of transparency within the facility. One detainee recounted their experience, saying, "The guards beat us. When one person speaks up for themselves, they take it out on all of us. They beat you for just insisting on getting your rights, food or medicine when you don’t get it."
