India Calls Meta Executives Over PM Modi's Facebook Post Restriction

In a recent turn of events, the Indian government has once again summoned executives from Meta, the parent company of Facebook, following a brief restriction on a post made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This incident has raised significant concerns regarding the oversight of content shared by high-profile figures on social media platforms. The summons occurred just days after Meta assured the Indian authorities that posts from the Prime Minister and other influential accounts would receive enhanced scrutiny. According to reports from the Press Trust of India (PTI), the government’s action reflects its commitment to ensuring that important communications from its leaders are not unduly hindered by technical issues or content moderation policies.

The controversy began when Prime Minister Modi's post, which focused on addressing the youth of India and outlining the government's firm stance against paper leaks, was temporarily restricted on Facebook. This prompted the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to call upon a senior Meta executive for clarification. Initially, Meta attributed the restriction to a technical glitch, which led to an apology from the company. However, the Indian government found this explanation unsatisfactory, prompting further inquiries into the matter. IT Secretary S. Krishnan expressed the ministry's dissatisfaction with the response from Meta, indicating that the government is seeking more comprehensive details regarding the incident and the measures being implemented to prevent such occurrences in the future.
