Mehbooba Mufti, the leader of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), has declared that her party will organize peaceful demonstrations across Jammu and Kashmir on August 5. This initiative aims to advocate for the reinstatement of Article 370 and to seek a resolution to the ongoing Kashmir conflict. During a press conference held at the PDP headquarters, which coincided with the party's 27th foundation anniversary, Mufti emphasized the importance of these protests. She urged all party members and supporters to participate actively in their respective districts, highlighting the significance of restoring both Article 370 and Article 35A, which provide special status and protections to the region. Mufti's call to action reflects her commitment to addressing the concerns of the Kashmiri people and advocating for their rights in the face of ongoing political challenges.
In her address, Mufti also took a moment to express regret regarding her previous comments made at Jantar Mantar, where she had supported a protest led by the Cockroach Janta Party against alleged irregularities in examinations. Her remarks had sparked criticism from various political figures, including former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who accused her of endorsing violence against protesters in Kashmir. In response to the backlash, Mufti issued an apology, stating, "I apologize if my remarks on violence against protesters in Kashmir have hurt anyone." This acknowledgment of her comments underscores the sensitivity surrounding the discourse on protests and violence in the region, particularly given the complex security situation in Kashmir.
