Severe Flooding in Odisha Displaces Thousands Amid Ongoing Rainfall

The flood crisis in Odisha has intensified significantly, with rising river levels and relentless rainfall wreaking havoc across the state. The latest report from the Office of the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) indicates that the flooding has severely impacted six districts, affecting 44 blocks, 233 gram panchayats, and 748 villages. This situation has disrupted the daily lives of countless families, leading to large-scale evacuations. As of now, over 203,000 individuals have been reported affected, with many low-lying areas submerged as local authorities work diligently to manage the evolving crisis. The district of Mayurbhanj has emerged as the most severely impacted, with flooding reported in 13 blocks, followed closely by Balasore with 12 blocks, Dhenkanal with 8, and Bhadrak, Jajpur, and Sambalpur, each with three blocks experiencing significant flooding. The swelling rivers, particularly the Baitarani, have inundated numerous villages, agricultural lands, and transportation networks, exacerbating the already dire situation.

Tragically, the floods have resulted in loss of life, with the SRC confirming that four individuals have died in Dhenkanal district due to flood-related incidents, while further reports from other affected areas are still being verified. In response to the escalating crisis, the Odisha government has ramped up its rescue and evacuation operations, successfully relocating nearly 28,000 individuals from high-risk areas to safer locations and temporary relief camps. Emergency response teams, including the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Fire Services, and local administration, have been deployed throughout the affected districts to assist stranded residents and provide critical emergency support. Relief camps have been established, equipped with essential supplies such as food, clean drinking water, medical assistance, and sanitation facilities. Additionally, arrangements are being made to provide fodder for livestock, and officials are closely monitoring embankments that are at risk of breaching.
