Parliament IT Panel to Question Meta and Google Over Content Issues

The recent technical issue that led to the temporary removal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Facebook video, combined with ongoing concerns regarding the presence of violent and abusive content during the NEET protests, is set to be a focal point as the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology prepares to interrogate major social media platforms. This inquiry is scheduled for August 3 and will involve representatives from Meta, Google, X (formerly Twitter), Snapchat, and other prominent digital service providers. The committee, chaired by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, aims to delve into the pressing issues surrounding content moderation and the accountability of these platforms in managing harmful content.

Committee members are expected to pose critical questions regarding the recent glitch that impacted the Prime Minister's Facebook video, as well as the broader issue of why violent or abusive content often remains accessible until flagged by law enforcement. The inquiry seeks to understand the mechanisms in place for content removal and the responsibilities of social media companies in proactively managing harmful material. Additionally, officials from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) have been summoned to provide insights and address the committee's concerns regarding the regulation of social media platforms.
