Supreme Court's Key Rulings on NEET Protests and Police Conduct

In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court of India addressed the ongoing concerns surrounding police actions during recent protests by students against alleged exam paper leaks. During a session on Tuesday, the court, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, emphasized the necessity for an independent investigation into the police's handling of the demonstrations that took place across the country. The court's directive comes in response to petitions highlighting excessive force used by law enforcement against peaceful protesters, particularly those associated with the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). The court has called for responses from the central government and the state administrations of Delhi, Maharashtra, Bihar, Assam, Kerala, and Uttar Pradesh regarding the police's conduct during these events.

The Supreme Court firmly stated that an independent probe is essential, asserting that accountability must be established for any misconduct by the police. The court remarked, "There has to be a completely independent probe. Whoever has committed excess, law will take its course. Probe is meaningless if no responsibility is fixed." This statement underscores the court's commitment to ensuring that the rights of protesters are protected and that any violations by law enforcement are thoroughly investigated. The court also noted that the police did not adhere to the standard operating procedures (SoPs) previously established for managing protests, which raises further questions about the legitimacy of their actions during the demonstrations.
