Trump's Attorney General Nominee Faces GOP Opposition Ahead of Confirmation Vote

Todd Blanche, the interim Attorney General of the United States, is encountering potential resistance from within the Republican Party as he prepares for a crucial confirmation hearing to officially lead the Department of Justice. On Wednesday, Senator John Cornyn expressed his skepticism regarding Blanche's nomination, indicating he is not ready to support the appointment. Cornyn's remarks come just a day before the Senate Judiciary Committee is set to vote on whether to advance Blanche's nomination, a significant step in the confirmation process. The senator's concerns stem from Blanche's management of the Department of Justice, which he has overseen in an acting capacity since April. Prior to this role, Blanche served as deputy attorney general and was previously a criminal defense attorney for Donald Trump during his presidency. Cornyn specifically pointed to a controversial settlement that Blanche negotiated in May, which arose from a lawsuit Trump filed against the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). This agreement would protect Trump and his family from future IRS audits and established an “anti-weaponisation fund” intended to provide financial support to individuals claiming political persecution. However, this fund has faced bipartisan criticism, with opponents labeling it a slush fund designed to benefit Trump’s allies. Recently, a federal judge ruled the settlement illegal, accusing Blanche of a conflict of interest by representing both the federal government and Trump as a private attorney.

During the confirmation hearing, Blanche reiterated his position that the controversial fund is no longer active, but Cornyn has requested written assurances to that effect, stating, “I haven’t seen a single piece of writing that is responsive to what I’ve requested.” The upcoming vote by the Senate Judiciary Committee is pivotal; all Republican members must support Blanche for him to advance to a broader Senate confirmation debate. Although GOP lawmakers have generally been cautious about opposing Trump, Cornyn has increasingly voiced criticism of the former president. This shift is particularly notable given that Trump endorsed Cornyn’s primary opponent, Ken Paxton, who won the Republican nomination in May and is now set to compete against Democrat James Talarico in a closely watched Senate race this November. Cornyn, who has served in the Senate for over twenty years, will conclude his term in January.

In a press conference at the White House, President Trump defended Blanche, describing him as “outstanding” and questioning Cornyn’s reluctance to support the nomination. Trump speculated that Cornyn’s hesitation might stem from his lack of endorsement during the primary. Critics have raised concerns about Blanche’s loyalty to Trump, alleging that he has used the Department of Justice to target the former president’s political opponents. Under Blanche’s leadership, the Justice Department pursued a second indictment against James Comey, the former FBI director, related to a social media post. Blanche has denied any conflict of interest, asserting that he operates independently of Trump. However, during a hearing in mid-July, he did not dispel the perception of favoritism when asked by Senator John Kennedy if he considered Trump a friend. Blanche initially referred to himself as Trump’s lawyer before quickly correcting his statement. The Department of Justice has historically maintained a standard of prosecutorial independence, ensuring that political considerations do not influence criminal charges.
