Sridhar Vembu Discusses Marxist Teacher's Impact on His Beliefs

Sridhar Vembu, co-founder and chief scientist of Zoho, has sparked considerable discussion on social media platforms following his recent reflections on the influence of a Marxist teacher during his formative years. Despite attending a school associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Vembu emphasized that his political and religious ideologies were shaped more by his experiences in the classroom than by the institution's affiliations. This revelation came in response to a broader conversation on X regarding the phenomenon of children from conservative backgrounds adopting leftist perspectives. Vembu shared insights from his upbringing in Tamil Nadu, where he attended a government-aided school from the sixth to the ninth grade, established by a figure linked to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). He noted that while the school was politically affiliated, he did not encounter any overt political messaging during his time there, which he found noteworthy.

After completing his earlier education, Vembu transitioned to another free school for his final years of secondary education, which was funded by an individual connected to the RSS and had an RSS member serving as a trustee. Despite this affiliation, he asserted that political discussions were absent from the classroom environment. “I did not even know what the RSS was and heard nothing about the RSS as a student,” he remarked, highlighting the disconnect between the school's governance and the educational content delivered to students. The pivotal influence on his ideological development, according to Vembu, came from his Tamil teacher in the tenth grade, who espoused Marxist beliefs. He vividly recalled how the teacher's lessons revolved around the concept of a forthcoming Marxist revolution, which resonated deeply with him at the age of fourteen.
