This anticipated showdown is envisioned as the final fight of McGregor's current contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). In a post shared on Instagram, McGregor hinted at the UFC's International Fight Week scheduled for July 2027, stating, "What was to be a generational beating is now to be reset. IFW 2027. The Last Dance." This potential clash would mark the third encounter between the two fighters, adding further intrigue to their rivalry.

The last time McGregor faced Holloway was during UFC 329, which took place in Las Vegas on July 11. In that bout, Holloway emerged victorious, securing a technical knockout just 69 seconds into the fight after McGregor sustained an injury to his right knee. Their first meeting occurred back in August 2013, where McGregor claimed victory by unanimous decision. As McGregor, now 38 years old, prepares for surgery to repair his torn anterior cruciate ligament, the timeline for this rematch appears to be extended. Despite recent social media posts showcasing his rehabilitation efforts, UFC president Dana White indicated that McGregor is expected to be sidelined for approximately a year.
