Last night, Harjinder Kaur made her mark on the international stage by securing a silver medal in the women's 69kg weightlifting category at the Commonwealth Games 2026 held in Glasgow. This remarkable achievement came after she lifted a personal best of 227kg, a moment that will be etched in the memories of sports fans across the nation. However, the journey to this podium moment is rooted in a much more humble beginning, far removed from the spotlight of competitive sports. Harjinder's story originates from a modest one-room home in Mehas village, located near Nabha in Punjab, where she spent her formative years. This backdrop is crucial to understanding the resilience and determination that have characterized her ascent in the world of weightlifting.
Growing up in an environment devoid of modern training facilities, Harjinder's early life was shaped by hard work on the family farm rather than access to gyms or specialized coaching. The absence of conventional resources did not deter her spirit; instead, it instilled a work ethic that would later prove invaluable. It wasn't until 2016 that her potential was recognized during a Kabaddi camp at Punjabi University. Coach Parmjeet Sharma noticed her exceptional strength and encouraged her to explore weightlifting. Despite the financial challenges that her family faced in supporting her training, Harjinder embraced this new path. Balancing her academic pursuits at SGTB Khalsa College in Anandpur Sahib with rigorous training under Sharma, she dedicated herself to mastering the sport, laying the groundwork for her future successes.
