The term 'body bag' has emerged as a hot topic in the world of professional pickleball, referring to the act of deliberately hitting the ball hard at an opponent. Recently, renowned player Jay Devilliers addressed this contentious issue during an appearance on the YouTube podcast 'The Kitchen Pickleball.' Devilliers elaborated on how the increasing competitiveness of the sport has influenced player behavior on the court. He noted that while he refrains from using body bags in casual games, his perspective shifts dramatically in high-stakes situations where tension and trash-talking escalate. 'I'm not necessarily pro body bag. If we are having a match that is intense and we're chirping at each other, then I feel it's a free game... If you want to play like that, I can do it. If you want to play hardball, let's play hardball,' he stated, highlighting the nuanced nature of competitive play.
Devilliers also recounted a personal experience involving a body bag, recalling a moment when he was unexpectedly targeted by 16-year-old Anna Leigh Waters. This incident took him by surprise, as he had never anticipated being on the receiving end of such a tactic, especially from a younger female player. 'When she did this, like first of all, I didn't expect it at all... I was in a really weird position where if a guy had done that, I'm like okay, like you know it's going to come at some point, but not a 16-year-old,' he reflected. This anecdote underscores the evolving dynamics within the sport, where aggressive strategies are becoming more commonplace, regardless of the opponent's age or gender.
