Reliance Foundation Launches Comprehensive Flood Relief Efforts in Assam

In the wake of devastating floods that have struck Assam, the Reliance Foundation has stepped in to provide extensive humanitarian aid and recovery initiatives in the most severely impacted districts, particularly Sivasagar and Charaideo. This initiative aims to restore essential services and support the local population as they begin to recover from one of the worst flood disasters in recent memory. The floods have tragically resulted in the loss of 81 lives and have affected over seven lakh individuals across twelve districts, submerging nearly 900 villages. While floodwaters have receded in many regions, more than three lakh people are still grappling with the aftermath, facing ongoing challenges such as damaged infrastructure, disrupted livelihoods, and power outages that hinder recovery efforts.

To address these urgent needs, the Reliance Foundation has mobilized its Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) expert teams to collaborate closely with the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department. Their primary focus is on restoring the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) drinking water schemes that were compromised by the floods. Teams are actively engaged in repairing and reactivating water supply projects in Nazira, Santak, and other severely affected areas within Sivasagar and Charaideo districts. In addition to restoring water supply, the Foundation is conducting village-level sanitation and water purification initiatives. This includes disinfecting water sources to ensure access to safe drinking water and promoting hygiene practices to mitigate the risk of waterborne diseases in the aftermath of the floods. To further support affected households, water filter kits are being distributed, providing immediate access to clean drinking water.

Moreover, the Reliance Foundation is addressing public health needs by aiding in the cleaning, sanitization, and restoration of healthcare facilities, including hospitals and Community Health Centres (CHCs). This effort is crucial for enabling these institutions to resume medical services in a safe and hygienic environment. In Santak, a WASH Consultant from the Foundation mentioned that they plan to extend humanitarian assistance to around 10,000 flood-affected individuals over the coming week, with a focus on providing support to 7,000 people in Sivasagar and 3,000 in Charaideo. The assistance package encompasses sanitation and hygiene support, shelter kits, food aid, and other essential relief materials to help vulnerable families meet their immediate needs and begin the process of rebuilding their lives. Additionally, the Foundation’s animal welfare initiative, Vantara, has deployed a dedicated veterinary team to care for nearly 4,000 flood-affected livestock, recognizing the importance of protecting these animals for the livelihoods of rural families. Through this comprehensive approach, the Reliance Foundation is ensuring that both human and animal welfare are prioritized, delivering relief and rehabilitation efforts in a holistic manner. The local community has expressed gratitude for the timely intervention, highlighting the positive impact of the Foundation's collaboration with the Public Health Engineering Department in restoring vital infrastructure and supporting flood-affected communities during this challenging period.
