Understanding the Provision of Two Bed Sheets in Indian Railways' AC Coaches

For travelers who often find themselves feeling warm even in air-conditioned environments, the provision of an extra blanket during train journeys may seem unnecessary. However, there is a well-considered rationale behind this practice. Each passenger traveling in First AC, Second AC, Third AC, and AC Economy classes receives a bedroll kit that includes two bed sheets, a pillow cover, and a hand towel, all of which are factored into the ticket price. This topic gained attention during a question-answer session in the Rajya Sabha, where Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw addressed inquiries from MP Chandrakant Damodar Handore regarding the frequency of washing woolen blankets, which is done only once a month. Vaishnaw explained that one bed sheet is intended to be placed on the sleeper seat, while the second serves as a blanket, ensuring that the woolen blanket does not come into direct contact with the passenger. It is worth noting that the regular bed sheets are laundered after each journey, maintaining hygiene standards for travelers.

The Indian Railways employs a rigorous quality control system to ensure the cleanliness of bed sheets and linens. This system utilizes specialized devices known as whito-meters, which are employed in mechanized laundries to assess the whiteness and cleanliness of the washed fabrics. According to a release from the Press Information Bureau (PIB), these devices measure the intensity of light reflected off the fabrics, ensuring that they meet the necessary hygiene standards before being included in passenger bedroll kits. This method is considered highly effective in confirming that the washing process has adequately removed dirt and stains. Moreover, CCTV cameras have been installed in laundry facilities to monitor the cleaning operations closely. The lifespan of bed sheets is typically evaluated based on their condition, usage, and overall serviceability, ensuring that passengers receive quality linens.
