Sanjay Dutt Reflects on His Film Debut Amid Mother's Illness

Sanjay Dutt's entry into Bollywood was anticipated to be a joyous occasion, marking the beginning of his career as a leading actor with the film Rocky, directed by his father, Sunil Dutt. However, this moment of excitement was overshadowed by a family tragedy, as his mother, the renowned actress Nargis, was battling cancer. The late 1970s saw Sunil Dutt dedicating himself to the project, with the family eagerly preparing for Sanjay's debut. Nargis was particularly enthusiastic, hoping to witness her son continue the family's illustrious legacy in the film industry. Unfortunately, fate dealt a harsh blow when she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, a devastating illness that would alter the course of their lives.

In a recent interview on AIG Hospitals’ YouTube channel, Sanjay Dutt opened up about the painful experience of watching his mother suffer. He recounted the difficult journey they faced, including a significant surgery at Sloan Kettering in New York, which was one of the few options available at the time. Sanjay, who was only 19 or 20 years old, described the emotional turmoil of that period, stating, “There were a lot of complications with her. We donated platelets, did everything we could.” He reflected on the trauma experienced by his family, especially as he and his younger sisters grappled with the reality of their mother's declining health. As the release of his film approached, the pressure mounted, and he found himself torn between his family's crisis and his professional commitments.

Sanjay revealed that his father insisted he return to complete the film while Nargis was in a coma, a decision that he struggled to understand at the time. He expressed his confusion about prioritizing the film over his mother's condition, stating, “I just couldn’t understand it, why complete the film when my mother was in a coma?” Despite his reservations, he complied with his father's wishes and returned to the set. Tragically, Nargis passed away on May 3, 1981, just five days before the premiere of Rocky on May 8. Sanjay has often expressed how much he longed for his mother to see his debut film, emphasizing the significance of her approval in his life. Her absence during this pivotal moment in his career left a profound impact on him, as he mourned the loss of the opportunity to share this milestone with her, a moment he had always dreamed of sharing with the woman who inspired him to pursue acting.
