New Zealand to Revamp SMC Resident Visa Rules Starting August 2026

New Zealand is set to implement significant modifications to its Skilled Migration Category Resident Visa (SMC) starting August 24, 2026. These changes will introduce two new pathways for residency, update the existing points system, and revise the wage threshold requirements. As per the official announcement, the new pathways will include the Skilled Work Experience Pathway and the Trades and Technician Pathway, which aim to streamline the application process for skilled workers already residing in New Zealand. The reforms are designed to assist those who may struggle to meet the current six-point threshold based solely on qualifications or income, particularly those in trades or technician roles.

The Skilled Work Experience Pathway will allow applicants to leverage their work experience in New Zealand to meet the necessary point requirements. This is particularly beneficial for individuals who do not have sufficient points from their qualifications or occupational registrations. To qualify under the Trades and Technician Pathway, applicants must possess a New Zealand qualification with a minimum of 120 credits on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework (NZQCF). For those with overseas qualifications, an International Qualification Assessment (IQA) from the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) will be mandatory. While the existing points-based pathway will remain intact, several enhancements will be introduced to facilitate the accumulation of points for New Zealand qualifications and overseas degrees, thereby allowing applicants to reach the six-point threshold with less work experience in New Zealand.
