Assam Floods Complicate Funeral for 106-Year-Old Woman Amid Crisis

Assam is currently experiencing one of its most severe flooding crises, which has resulted in widespread devastation throughout the region. The floods have tragically claimed approximately 76 lives, with over 332,000 individuals affected across numerous districts. At the height of the disaster, the number of impacted residents soared beyond 700,000, as hundreds of villages were submerged, roads were obliterated, and vast areas were cut off from essential services and normalcy. The relentless waters have wreaked havoc, inundating homes, destroying agricultural lands, and severely disrupting public infrastructure. Even the historic Kabarsthan graveyard in Jorhat has succumbed to the floodwaters, underscoring the magnitude of this calamity.

In the midst of this dire situation, a poignant incident from Greater Alengmora, located on the outskirts of Jorhat, has deeply affected the local community. Aitikou Tamuli, affectionately known as “No-Khuri,” passed away unexpectedly while her neighborhood was engulfed by the overflowing Bhogdoi River. Her family, already grappling with the overwhelming challenges posed by the floods, faced an additional heart-wrenching dilemma: how to conduct her final rites when their entire village was surrounded by water. With floodwaters invading homes and the courtyard submerged, there was no dry land available for a proper funeral. Family members and community members were left to navigate the emotional turmoil of loss while also contending with the physical barriers created by the disaster.
