Naveen Patnaik Criticizes Change of Indian Hockey Jersey Color

Naveen Patnaik, the former Chief Minister of Odisha and leader of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), expressed his deep discontent regarding the recent decision to alter the Indian hockey team's jersey color from its traditional blue to saffron. Patnaik articulated that this change represents an attempt to diminish the rich sporting heritage associated with the blue jersey, which has long been a symbol of national pride and unity. The announcement of the new jerseys comes ahead of the FIH Men’s and Women’s Hockey World Cups, set to commence on August 14 and 15, respectively. Hockey India revealed on July 27 that both teams would be sporting saffron jerseys during the tournaments in the Netherlands and Belgium, a move that has sparked considerable debate among fans and former players alike.

In a statement shared on social media platform X, Patnaik lamented the loss of the iconic blue color, stating, “I am deeply anguished to know that the legendary colour of the Indian hockey team’s jersey has been changed to saffron. The iconic shade of blue of the Indian hockey team is not just a colour. It is an emotion associated with the nation’s sporting heritage.” He emphasized the emotional connection that fans have with the blue jersey, which has been a source of hope and pride for decades, representing the spirit of the nation during both victories and defeats. Patnaik highlighted that the blue color is derived from the blue chakra in the Indian flag, reinforcing its significance as a national symbol that resonates with every Indian citizen.

Patnaik, who has served as Chief Minister for an extended period, criticized the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Odisha for what he perceives as an unnecessary political maneuver. He argued that the change in jersey color should not be influenced by shifts in government, stating, “Just because the government changed in Odisha, it should not change our national team colours. This is petty politics of the worst kind.” He further asserted that the blue jersey holds the same importance for Indians as the iconic stripes do for Argentina or the yellow jersey does for Brazil. Following the backlash, Hockey India clarified that the decision to switch to saffron was based on technical recommendations to improve visibility on the blue synthetic playing surface, a justification that has not appeased many critics, including former team captain Viren Rasquinha, who called the change “embarrassing.”
