BJP Files Privilege Motion Against Rahul Gandhi Amidst Parliamentary Tensions

This move comes in response to remarks made by Gandhi during a debate concerning the Anti-Paper Leak Bill, where he allegedly employed derogatory language that the BJP claims violates parliamentary decorum. The motion was formally submitted by BJP MP Anurag Thakur, who cited specific parliamentary rules that he believes Gandhi contravened during his speech, particularly highlighting the use of terms such as 'idiots' and 'andhbhakts'. Thakur's notice, submitted under Rules 222 and 223, asserts that Gandhi's comments were not only offensive but also aimed at discrediting political adversaries and government supporters alike. The BJP's stance is that such language undermines the dignity of the parliamentary process and constitutes contempt of the House.

Thakur's notice elaborates on the nature of Gandhi's remarks, which he claims were made during a recounting of a conversation with a student. The BJP leader contends that Gandhi's categorization of individuals into groups of 'students', 'idiots', and 'andhbhakts' was inappropriate and disrespectful. Furthermore, Thakur argues that Gandhi's comments strayed from the topic at hand, violating Rule 352(viii), which mandates that members stay focused on the matter being debated. The allegations extend to claims that Gandhi made serious accusations against Union Home Minister Amit Shah without providing the necessary prior notice as stipulated by Rule 353. Thakur insists that this behavior not only disrupts the functioning of the Lok Sabha but also disregards the authority of the Speaker, thereby justifying the breach of privilege claim.
