Google Photos Introduces New Features: Disable Shimmer Effect and AI Camera Shortcut

Google Photos is introducing a series of updates aimed at enhancing user experience for Android users, focusing on three main interface changes. One of the most notable updates is the option to disable the shimmer effect, a glowing outline that appears around people and objects within the app. This feature is designed to assist users in identifying actions that can be performed on subjects, such as creating digital stickers. However, feedback from users indicated that the shimmer effect could be distracting, particularly when browsing through photos. In response to this, Google has implemented a straightforward solution, allowing users to turn off the shimmer effect if they choose to do so. By accessing the three-dot menu in the main Photos view and navigating to the relevant settings, users can easily disable this visual cue. It is important to note that turning off the shimmer effect does not eliminate the editing or creation functionalities associated with the images.

In addition to the shimmer control, Google Photos is rolling out a Material 3 Expressive redesign for its settings interface. This update introduces a more organized layout, utilizing distinct visual containers to help users better navigate various settings and controls. The redesigned interface has been observed in several sections, including the main Settings page, as well as Backup and Preferences. However, some areas, such as Notifications, Sharing, Apps and Devices, and Privacy, still retain the previous design, indicating that the rollout of the new visual style is being conducted in phases. This gradual approach allows Google to refine the user experience while ensuring that the transition is smooth and manageable for all users.
