The Indian Air Force (IAF) is embarking on an innovative initiative to upgrade its helicopter fleet with advanced technology aimed at countering the growing threat of rogue drones and low-flying munitions. This strategic move involves the integration of specialized micro-missiles and artificial intelligence (AI)-powered radars, which will significantly enhance the operational capabilities of helicopters in aerial defense scenarios. The initiative is part of a broader effort by the IAF to collaborate with the defense industry, seeking partnerships that can facilitate the development and deployment of these cutting-edge systems.
This ambitious plan was unveiled during the recent SANKALP 2026 seminar, co-hosted by the IAF and the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM) in New Delhi. The seminar served as a platform for the air force to present its problem statements handbook, highlighting the urgent need for innovative solutions to address vulnerabilities exposed in recent global conflicts, such as Operation Sindoor. These events have underscored the limitations of conventional air defense systems when faced with low-cost, low-radar-cross-section unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Traditional ground-based systems often struggle to effectively engage these threats due to challenges such as terrain masking and line-of-sight obstructions, prompting the IAF to seek new capabilities that can be integrated into rotary-wing platforms.
To meet these challenges, the IAF is proposing that helicopters be equipped with micro-missiles specifically designed for engaging slow-moving, low-altitude targets. This upgrade will also include the integration of 20mm front guns, enhancing the helicopters' firepower. The initiative calls for the implementation of AI systems to facilitate accurate target identification, alongside lightweight airborne radio-frequency and GPS jamming technologies, which will work in conjunction with electro-optical and infrared pods. Furthermore, the specifications for the micro-missiles include proximity-fused or time-delay fragmentation warheads, designed to maximize effectiveness within a 25-meter mid-air burst radius. The IAF operates a diverse range of helicopters, including advanced combat models like the Apache and the LCH Prachand. Historically, the air force has depended on a layered network of ground-based air defense systems to counter aerial threats. However, the evolving landscape of warfare, particularly highlighted by recent conflicts in West Asia, has prompted a reevaluation of this strategy, leading to the exploration of helicopters as a viable counter-unmanned aerial system (C-UAS) platform.
