In today's digital age, making payments online has become an integral part of everyday life for countless individuals. However, a recent experience shared by a Mumbai resident has shed light on the often-overlooked issue of recurring charges that can easily slip under the radar. This revelation came to light when Lokesh Ahuja, an assistant vice president at Nykaa and an alumnus of IIM Mumbai, assisted his mother in navigating the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system. During this process, he discovered multiple AutoPay mandates that had been activated, stemming from free trial offers that his mother had unknowingly accepted. Ahuja's post on LinkedIn has sparked a broader conversation about the importance of digital literacy and the hidden costs associated with subscription services.
Ahuja recounted how he had introduced his mother to UPI a few months prior, and while reviewing her phone, he stumbled upon several active AutoPay subscriptions. When he inquired about the services she had signed up for, she responded with confusion, stating she had not subscribed to anything. It was then that Ahuja realized that these charges were linked to free trials that automatically transitioned into paid subscriptions after an initial period. He highlighted the common practice of offering a free month, but noted that these offers often come with the caveat of automatic monthly billing unless canceled. Ahuja emphasized that such small deductions, like a ₹79 charge, can easily go unnoticed amid a flurry of other transactions, making it crucial for users to be vigilant about their financial commitments.
