Recent developments regarding Claude AI conversations that were publicly accessible and appeared in Google Search have sparked significant concerns about user privacy when engaging with AI chatbots. Although the links to these conversations have since been removed from search results, this incident highlights the importance of being cautious with what is shared through public links, as such information can reach a wider audience than initially intended. To help users maintain control over their shared conversations, this article outlines essential steps to ensure privacy while using Claude AI.

The issue primarily revolved around chats that users intentionally shared using the 'Create public link' feature available in the Claude desktop application. Users can easily share a conversation by clicking the curved forward arrow located in the top-right corner of the interface. They are then given two options: 'Keep private' or 'Create public link.' By selecting the latter, a URL is generated that allows anyone with access to the link to view the conversation. According to a spokesperson from Anthropic, the company behind Claude, they do not provide chat directories or sitemaps to search engines like Google. The spokesperson emphasized that shared links are not discoverable unless users actively share them on platforms like social media, where they could potentially be archived by third-party services. Despite these assurances, numerous shared Claude chats reportedly appeared in Google Search before being removed, some of which contained sensitive information such as cryptocurrency wallet details and private legal discussions.
