In response to the surging demand for high-performance hardware driven by advancements in artificial intelligence, Samsung is reportedly ramping up its production of dynamic random-access memory (DRAM). This strategic move is aimed at addressing the increasing needs of major technology firms, particularly Apple, which has been significantly impacted by the rising costs of memory components. As the tech industry continues to evolve, Samsung's efforts to enhance its DRAM output could play a crucial role in stabilizing supply chains and meeting the needs of consumers and manufacturers alike.
According to information from the South Korean news outlet Sedaily.com, Samsung has initiated the formation of a specialized task force dedicated to expanding its DRAM production capabilities. The company plans to establish a new backend fabrication facility for general-purpose DRAM at its Hwaseong Campus Complex 1 (H1). Instead of constructing a completely new facility, Samsung intends to utilize existing cleanrooms that have been underused at the H1 site. This strategy is expected to minimize construction expenses and expedite the timeline for ramping up production. Sources within the industry suggest that this expansion could lead to an approximate 15 percent increase in Samsung's DRAM production capacity by the end of 2026 compared to the beginning of the year. The consolidation of the main fabrication and backend processes at a single location is anticipated to enhance logistics efficiency, allowing for bulk transfers of wafers to the backend processing line.
