The UK’s competition authority has initiated a formal inquiry into Microsoft, focusing on the company’s recent modifications to its Microsoft 365 subscription services. This investigation arises from concerns that users may not have received adequate information regarding changes to their subscription plans, particularly with the introduction of new artificial intelligence features such as Copilot. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) aims to determine if customers were misled into incurring higher subscription costs without a clear understanding of the available options. The CMA stated in a press release that the investigation will scrutinize the alterations made to Microsoft 365 plans, which provide users across the UK access to essential applications like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, along with the newly introduced Copilot feature. These subscription plans can be acquired either on a monthly or annual basis, and the CMA noted that Microsoft began implementing these changes in January 2025. Existing subscribers were initially granted access to the new AI functionalities without any additional charges until their current subscription period concluded.
However, upon renewal, customers found themselves automatically transitioned to a more expensive subscription plan that included the AI features, unless they actively opted for a different plan or chose to cancel their subscription altogether. Hayley Fletcher, the Senior Director for Consumer Protection at the CMA, emphasized the importance of clarity regarding pricing and subscription options, especially in a time when many households are facing financial constraints. Fletcher remarked, “People across the UK rely on Microsoft 365, whether they’re studying, sending emails, or managing household finances. At a time when household budgets are squeezed, it’s important that people are clear on the price and the subscription plans available, so they can find the right deal for them.” She further added that when a business modifies its subscription offerings, it is crucial for customers to receive clear and timely information about their choices. The investigation will assess whether Microsoft’s communication with its customers was misleading, resulting in users paying more than they should have.
