Modi Government Approves Major Rail Connectivity Initiative for Andhra and Karnataka

In a significant move to enhance transportation infrastructure, the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light for the construction of four new railway lines that will bolster rail connectivity between the states of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. This decision was announced by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw during a Cabinet briefing held on Thursday. The initiative aims to establish the third and fourth railway lines along a vital economic corridor that links these two states, thereby facilitating smoother movement of goods and passengers.

During the briefing, Minister Vaishnaw highlighted the importance of this project, stating, “Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the Cabinet meeting, which approved two major decisions. The first is the construction of the third and fourth railway lines on a key economic corridor connecting Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.” This development is expected to significantly enhance freight transportation capabilities, improve passenger services, and stimulate economic activities throughout the region, which has been a focal point for growth in recent years.

In addition to the railway initiative, the Cabinet also endorsed a new scheme aimed at advancing India’s chemicals sector. Vaishnaw elaborated on this decision, emphasizing the foundational role of the chemicals industry in the economy, similar to that of semiconductors. He stated, “The second is the approval of a new scheme to develop India’s chemicals sector in a completely new way.” The railway project specifically targets the Guntakal-Ballari section and is part of a larger rail corridor that connects Guntakal, Ballari, Hosapete, Hubballi, and Ankola. The total length of the new railway lines will span approximately 46 kilometers, with an estimated investment of Rs 1,264 crore. This initiative is anticipated to be completed within three years and will include the construction of a major bridge over the Vedavati River, along with seven additional major bridges and 52 minor bridges. The successful execution of this project is expected to create a comprehensive economic railway corridor across North Karnataka, thereby enhancing industrial growth and logistics capabilities in the region.
