India's mid-day meal initiative, aimed at enhancing nutrition and boosting attendance among schoolchildren, is experiencing varied implementations across different states. In Karnataka, the rising cost of eggs has prompted schools to reassess their meal plans under the PM Poshan Scheme. The state currently allocates Rs 5 for each egg and an additional Re 1 for logistics; however, with market prices soaring to Rs 8-9 per egg, many schools are finding it increasingly difficult to procure eggs within the budget set by the government. Consequently, some institutions have opted to substitute eggs with bananas, while others have adjusted their distribution schedule to provide eggs on alternate days. In certain areas of Mysuru, schools have even halted egg servings entirely. To address this shortfall, teachers and School Development and Monitoring Committees (SDMCs) have stepped in, with some educators reportedly contributing from their own finances to ensure that students continue to receive the necessary nutrition from eggs. The Karnataka government is currently seeking approval to raise the allocation to Rs 8 per egg, with a decision anticipated following a review by the finance department.
In contrast to Karnataka's challenges, Tamil Nadu is exploring ways to enhance its school meal offerings. The state’s School Education Minister, Rajmohan, has proposed the introduction of chicken biryani once a week as part of the Mid-Day Meal Scheme, a suggestion that has been submitted to Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay for consideration. This initiative is seen as a continuation of Tamil Nadu's commitment to improving school nutrition, a legacy that has evolved over the years. Historical figures such as K. Kamaraj, who initiated the mid-day meal program, and M. Karunanidhi, who included eggs in the menu, have laid the groundwork for this ongoing enhancement. Additionally, M.G. Ramachandran transformed the initiative into the Nutritious Meal Programme, while J. Jayalalithaa increased the frequency of egg distribution. The government is also contemplating an overhaul of the breakfast menu, aiming to replace repetitive items like wheat and rava upma with healthier options. However, no definitive decision regarding the biryani proposal has been made yet.
