Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey Faces Controversy Over Viking Ship Repairs

Christopher Nolan's latest film, The Odyssey, is achieving remarkable success at the global box office, rapidly approaching the Rs 100-crore milestone in India. However, this triumph has been overshadowed by a controversy involving the film's production team and the owners of a Viking ship that was utilized during filming. The owners have publicly accused the filmmakers of neglecting to settle a repair bill for the vessel, which they claim remains unpaid.

The ship in question, known as Glad av Gillberga, is a replica of a Viking longship owned by the non-profit organization Vikingaleden association. It was reportedly featured in The Odyssey as an ancient Greek warship. Peter Olausson, the chairman of the association, expressed initial excitement about their ship's inclusion in a Christopher Nolan project. Unfortunately, that enthusiasm quickly turned to disappointment when the ship was returned in a damaged state, and they allege that Universal Pictures has failed to reimburse them for the necessary repairs.

Olausson stated, “We are only charging for the material cost, not the labour. Of course, Universal can afford this $6,000. We feel forgotten.” He emphasized that there was a clear understanding from the outset that the association would handle the repairs and would subsequently be compensated. “The agreement was that we would fix it and get financially reimbursed,” he added. Although the ship has been repaired and is back in operation, the association claims it has yet to receive the funds it believes it is owed, with more than a year having passed since filming concluded. In response to these allegations, Universal Pictures has denied any wrongdoing, asserting that all invoices related to the Glad av Gillberga, including repair costs, were settled in full. A spokesperson for the studio indicated that efforts have been made to address any misunderstandings with the association. Meanwhile, The Odyssey continues to perform exceptionally well at the box office, having been produced on a budget of approximately $250 million. The film debuted with an impressive $264 million globally and has since accrued an additional $100 million, bringing its total earnings close to $400 million. The Odyssey, set for release in 2026, is an epic fantasy action film inspired by Homer's ancient Greek epic poem. It stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, who embarks on a decade-long journey home filled with mythical creatures, perilous challenges, and emotional reunions. The film also features Anne Hathaway as his wife, Penelope, alongside a star-studded cast that includes Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Samantha Morton, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron. Produced by Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas under their production company, Syncopy, The Odyssey is poised to be a significant cinematic event.
