The latest spinoff from the beloved sitcom The Big Bang Theory, titled Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, has taken the spotlight following the earlier series Young Sheldon and Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage. This new comedy, crafted by the creative minds of Chuck Lorre, Zak Penn, and Bill Prady, shifts its focus to the character of Stuart Bloom, portrayed by Kevin Sussman, who is known for running a comic book store. Unlike its predecessors, this series does not feature any members of the Cooper family, marking a distinct departure from the previous storylines. The show also sees the return of familiar faces, including Lauren Lapkus, Brian Posehn, and John Ross Bowie, who reprise their roles from the original series. However, the most notable return is that of Kunal Nayyar as Raj Koothrappali, a character who has been a fan favorite since the inception of The Big Bang Theory. Spoilers are ahead for those who have yet to watch the premiere episode!
In the debut episode, viewers are thrust into a post-apocalyptic Pasadena, where the familiar characters Stuart and Bert, played by Sussman and Posehn respectively, encounter an alternate version of Stuart himself. This alternate Stuart implores them to repair a quantum interference machine that was originally constructed by Sheldon Cooper and Leonard Hofstadter at Cal Tech, setting the stage for an epic quest to save the universe. As they navigate through the transformed university, which is now under the control of Barry Kripke, also known as the Great Khalif of South Pasadena, they are joined by Denise, played by Lapkus. The plot thickens as they uncover that Kripke has been holding Raj captive for years, and he has undergone a drastic transformation, sporting a long beard and hair. The trio seeks Raj's assistance in their mission, but just as they approach the machine to rectify the chaos, a shocking turn of events occurs: Kripke shoots Raj. This unexpected twist has left fans reeling, as Raj's demise happens in the very first episode, raising questions about the implications of this event within the show's narrative.
