A recent study published in the journal Neurology by the American Academy of Neurology has raised concerns about the potential cognitive effects of artificial sweeteners, particularly in relation to memory loss. The research involved a comprehensive analysis of 12,772 adults, with an average age of 52, who were monitored over a period of approximately eight years. Participants provided information on their consumption of seven different sweeteners, including aspartame, saccharin, acesulfame K, erythritol, xylitol, sorbitol, and tagatose, through food frequency questionnaires. Cognitive assessments were conducted at the beginning, midpoint, and conclusion of the study to evaluate any changes in memory and thinking abilities.
The findings revealed that individuals under the age of 60 who consumed higher amounts of these sweeteners experienced a 62% faster decline in cognitive functions compared to those who consumed the least. This significant difference in cognitive decline is estimated to equate to approximately one and a half additional years of brain aging. Even those who consumed moderate amounts of sweeteners were not exempt from the effects, showing a 35% faster decline in cognitive abilities compared to the lowest consumption group. Dr. Claudia Kimie Suemoto, the study's lead author from the University of São Paulo, emphasized that while low-calorie sweeteners are often perceived as healthier alternatives to sugar, the findings indicate that certain sweeteners may adversely affect brain health over time.
