US Intensifies Attacks on Iran Amid Shipping Disruptions

The United States has escalated its military operations against Iran, marking the 13th consecutive night of airstrikes as of Thursday. Reports indicate that explosions were heard in various Iranian cities early Friday morning, further heightening tensions in the region. The ongoing conflict has led to significant disruptions in shipping activities, particularly in the vital Strait of Hormuz. According to ship tracking data, only one tanker successfully navigated the strait on Thursday, the lowest number recorded since early May. In a contrasting development, two Chinese supertankers transporting crude oil from Saudi Arabia managed to pass through the Bab al-Mandeb strait on Friday, despite a naval blockade imposed by the Houthis in Yemen against Saudi shipping earlier in the week. This situation underscores the complexities of maritime security in the region amid escalating hostilities.

On Friday, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the conclusion of its latest round of strikes against Iranian military targets at 01:00 GMT. The strikes were aimed at various strategic locations, including military command centers, drone storage facilities, and coastal surveillance sites. Iranian media reported multiple explosions across cities such as Khorramabad, Khondab, Konarak, and Jask. Notably, an early morning drone attack in Khorramabad resulted in injuries to two individuals, according to local authorities. Additionally, reports from Iran’s Mehr news agency indicated that US missile strikes targeted the cities of Andimeshk and Omidiyeh in the Khuzestan province, although no casualties were reported. Al Jazeera correspondent Tohid Assidi noted that explosions were also heard on Qeshm Island, strategically located in the Strait of Hormuz, while Iranian media reported injuries from attacks on the port city of Bandar Abbas and fatalities from a missile strike near Ahvaz.
