Romanian Fighter Jet Intercepts Suspected Russian Drone in Airspace Breach

In a significant development, a Romanian fighter jet successfully intercepted and shot down a drone believed to be of Russian origin that had entered the nation's airspace. This incident occurred on Friday and marks a pivotal moment for Romania, as it is the first time since the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine that the country has engaged in the interception of an unidentified aircraft. Romanian President Nicusor Dan highlighted the importance of this event, emphasizing the growing concerns regarding the potential spillover of the conflict into neighboring NATO countries. As tensions escalate, Romania has been on high alert, facing an increasing number of unauthorized drone incursions, a situation that has become more frequent as both Russia and Ukraine deploy hundreds of drones daily in their ongoing conflict.

According to reports, the Romanian F-16 fighter jet was deployed after radar systems detected the drone approximately 20 kilometers east of the Black Sea port of Sulina. The drone proceeded to cross into Romanian airspace, traversing through Braila, Fetesti, and Buzau counties. In response to the incursion, two Italian Eurofighter Typhoon jets, part of NATO's air policing mission, joined two Romanian F-16s in the operation. One of the F-16s engaged the drone with an air-to-air missile, successfully bringing it down over an uninhabited area near the village of Padina. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties or injuries resulting from this incident. A military source from Romania indicated to Reuters that the drone's trajectory and previous patterns of incursions suggested it likely originated from Russian territory.
