Assam CM Urges Meghalaya to Regulate Jorabat Development Amid Flood Crisis

Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed significant concerns regarding the rapid development occurring in and around Jorabat, a region that has been identified as posing serious risks to the city of Guwahati. During a recent statement, Sarma highlighted that a panel appointed by the Supreme Court has raised alarms about the potential dangers associated with ongoing construction activities near the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) and its surroundings. He emphasized that unchecked development could lead to severe consequences for Guwahati, warning that the city could face overwhelming water influx, which would exceed the capacity of its drainage systems.

In light of these pressing issues, Sarma has called upon the Meghalaya government to adopt a more considerate approach towards the environmental impact of development projects in the area. He urged for the implementation of regulatory measures to control construction activities, stating that without such interventions, Guwahati could become increasingly difficult to manage. The Chief Minister conveyed his concerns in a conversation with his counterpart in Meghalaya, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, and noted that the matter is currently under examination by the Supreme Court of India, with hearings expected to take place soon. Sarma's appeal underscores the urgency of the situation, as he warned that the volume of water flowing into Guwahati could render the city unmanageable if proactive steps are not taken.
