Assam Floods Claim 61 Lives; Relief Efforts Hampered for 80,000 Residents

The flood crisis in Assam has escalated dramatically, with the death toll now standing at 61 following the tragic loss of 14 more lives in just one day. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by the government in delivering essential relief supplies to approximately 80,000 individuals who remain stranded due to the inundation of several regions. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has reported that over 705,000 residents across nine districts have been adversely affected by the relentless flooding.

Sivasagar district has emerged as the most severely impacted area, with nearly 350,000 individuals suffering from the consequences of the floods, closely followed by Charaideo and Jorhat districts. The situation remains dire, with 856 villages submerged and more than 56,600 hectares of agricultural land severely damaged. During a press briefing, Chief Minister Sarma expressed the government's determination to reach all affected individuals with necessary relief items, though he acknowledged that many remain unreachable due to the extensive damage to infrastructure. Roads in numerous locations are still covered in thick layers of mud and silt, despite the floodwaters beginning to recede. The Chief Minister also mentioned that ministers have been deployed to the hardest-hit regions of Upper Assam, and efforts are underway to mobilize additional boats and essential supplies. Previous attempts to deliver aid via airdrops were unsuccessful due to damage sustained by the supplies, prompting discussions with the Indian Air Force regarding improved packaging methods for future deliveries.
