Witnessing the Chalo Sansad March: A Day of Protest and Unity

On the morning of July 20, the atmosphere at Janpath Metro station was electric as students began to pour out in droves, heading towards Jantar Mantar for the Chalo Sansad march. The event was organized in response to the tragic suicides of 21 students linked to the NEET paper leak, which had sparked outrage across the nation. As I arrived at the protest site, I was struck by the lack of security; only a handful of police officers and a few vans were present, allowing protesters to enter freely without any checks. This sense of openness, however, would soon be overshadowed by chaos and conflict. By mid-morning, the peaceful gathering transformed dramatically as police erected barricades, effectively encircling the area and restricting movement. Protesters described the situation as feeling like an 'open jail,' with limited options for escape as the crowd continued to swell. Communication became nearly impossible as signal jammers rendered phones useless, complicating the situation further.

As the hours passed, the atmosphere remained surprisingly calm, with students expressing their demands through creative slogans and chants. The energy was palpable, with groups of protesters singing and rallying together, united in their call for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. I encountered many passionate individuals, including Nikhil Pal, a 19-year-old law student who stood resolutely with a placard, articulating the protesters' singular demand. The crowd was a tapestry of youthful exuberance, with students dancing and making light of the situation, even as police began to tighten their grip on the protest. The mood shifted when news broke that two CJP spokespersons had gone to negotiate with government officials, momentarily igniting hope among the demonstrators.
