India Introduces Tougher Laws Against Exam Paper Leaks

The Indian government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is reportedly implementing stringent legal measures to combat organized paper leak syndicates. These new provisions aim to establish a mandatory three-month timeline for both investigation and trial processes, alongside the introduction of special fast-track courts designed to expedite the judicial proceedings related to examination fraud. This initiative is a response to the increasing frequency of paper leak incidents that have raised significant public concern, particularly following controversies surrounding the NEET examination. The government’s objective is to dismantle the networks responsible for these fraudulent activities and ensure that justice is served swiftly.

Among the key features of the proposed legal framework is the establishment of fast-track courts, which will be legally mandated to complete investigations and deliver verdicts within a three-month period. This represents a significant shift from the traditionally lengthy legal processes that have characterized such cases, often leaving affected students and the public in a state of uncertainty. The government is also advocating for harsher penalties for individuals involved in organized examination fraud, with proposed sentences of up to ten years in prison and fines reaching as high as Rs 10 crore. These measures were discussed during a recent Union Cabinet meeting, reflecting the government’s commitment to addressing the issue of examination integrity head-on.
