Supreme Court to Monitor Reforms for NEET Exam Security Measures

On Friday, the Supreme Court of India announced its intention to closely oversee the government's initiatives aimed at reforming the National Testing Agency (NTA) and preventing future leaks of examination papers for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). The court's remarks came during a hearing concerning petitions submitted by the United Doctors Front and the FAIMA Doctors Association, which highlighted significant structural challenges within the NTA. Justices PS Narasimha and Alok Aradhe underscored the necessity for a permanent institutional framework to address these issues, rather than relying on temporary or ad hoc solutions that have historically plagued the examination process. This scrutiny arises in the wake of a recent controversy surrounding alleged question paper leaks that have raised serious questions about the integrity of one of India's most significant medical entrance examinations.

The Supreme Court's concerns were amplified by the government's recent appointment of the Radhakrishnan Committee, tasked with recommending comprehensive reforms to the NTA and the examination process. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the government, informed the court that progress had been made regarding the proposed reforms and requested additional time to present a detailed plan. Justice Narasimha, however, emphasized the court's expectation for enduring institutional reforms rather than temporary fixes, pointing out that extraordinary security measures previously employed, such as deploying the Air Force for transporting question papers, are not sustainable long-term solutions. The court's focus is now on establishing robust safeguards that would eliminate the need for such drastic measures in the future.
