Jannik Sinner Defends Monaco Residency Amid Criticism from Italian Journalist

Jannik Sinner, currently ranked as the world's top tennis player, has recently come under scrutiny from Italian journalist Luca Sommi regarding his choice to reside in Monaco rather than Italy. The criticism stems from Monaco's advantageous tax regulations, which have attracted numerous elite athletes. Sinner, who reportedly earns close to €70 million annually, has been urged by Sommi to reconsider his tax residence, especially in light of fellow tennis star Carlos Alcaraz, who maintains his tax obligations in Spain. During a recent television appearance, Sommi expressed his frustration, questioning Sinner's decision by stating, “It annoys me a lot too. But sometimes I ask myself the same question. You earn €70 million a year, but why don’t you do like Alcaraz, who has kept his tax residence in Spain? Is €70 million a year not enough?”

In response to the backlash, Sinner previously articulated his reasoning for choosing Monaco as his home during an interview with L'Equipe. He emphasized the tranquility and privacy he enjoys in Monaco, stating, “I chose Monaco for the peace and quiet I find here: I can go to a restaurant or do my shopping without anyone paying attention to me, and that’s exactly what I need.” Sinner further elaborated on the benefits of living in Monaco, highlighting the excellent training facilities available, including top-notch tennis courts and gyms. While he acknowledges the emotional toll of being away from his family, particularly as his grandparents age, he believes that relocating to Italy would hinder his training and overall performance. Sinner's commitment to becoming the best player he can be remains his top priority, even if it means facing criticism for his residency choice.
