Mark Swan has made history by securing the inaugural gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, marking a thrilling start to the event for Team England. The 25-year-old para powerlifter achieved this remarkable feat during a nail-biting competition that saw him lift an impressive 222 kilograms, which is more than three times his own body weight. This incredible performance placed him in a tie with Nigeria’s Roland Ezuruike, both athletes finishing with an identical score of 153.9 points in the men’s lightweight final. However, the tension escalated as both competitors were unable to succeed in their final lifts, prompting officials to resort to tie-breaking rules to determine the winner. In an unexpected twist, even Swan himself was initially unaware of his victory. After completing his final lift, he believed he had finished outside the medal standings, only to be informed by his coach of his gold medal achievement backstage. “I’m not sure why. I think it’s maybe because I lifted last. I don’t actually know,” Swan expressed, reflecting on the confusion surrounding the outcome. He added, “I came back off the third lift and I actually thought I’d got bronze.” His coach’s enthusiastic reaction further puzzled him, as he initially thought it was a joke. “My coach was like: ‘Good job on gold’.
